Kali Linux 2026.2 released

Kali Linux is the most widely used penetration testing distribution, maintained by Offensive Security and packed with hundreds of security and forensics tools out of the box.
The 2026.2 release ships a kernel upgrade, desktop environment updates, infrastructure modernization, and 9 new tools:

Kernel
- Linux 6.19 (7.0 available in kali-experimental)
Desktop Environments
- GNOME 50: faster thumbnail/icon loading in file manager, improved
accessibility preferences, document annotation support
- KDE Plasma 6.6: new on-screen keyboard, Spectacle screenshot tool
with OCR text extraction, color-vision support, Slow Keys on Wayland
Infrastructure
- /etc/apt/sources.list migrated to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kali.sources
(deb822-style format, new installations only)
- Services helper scripts now consistently handle start/stop, status,
credential display, and browser access
- First African mirror added (South Africa, by AFRICLOUD)
VM Optimization
- Graphics firmware removed from pre-built VM images
- Initrd reduced from 200 MB to 60 MB, boot time cut by ~3x
Disruptive Changes (reboot required)
- polkitd package requires system reboot after upgrade
- xrdp/xorgxrdp upgraded to v0.10 (affects Hyper-V Enhanced Session Mode)
